When Jack Martin started trying to put together the County College of Morris Athletic Hall of Fame, he envisioned an intimate event. What Martin got was a sold-out celebration of Titans history.
Martin, the first athletic director, men’s basketball and baseball coach at CCM, was part of the first class inducted on Saturday night. And nearly everyone joining him in the inaugural group mentioned Martin and former CCM Dean of Students George Dragonetti.
Both men were part of the college when the doors of the lone building opened to fewer than 500 students in September 1968. Martin had to build athletic programs with no fields or gym.
“I took a risk,” said Martin, a Wharton native who joined CCM from Morris Hills.
“It was an opportunity. I made a choice, and I stayed there until I retired. I didn’t know anything about two-year schools, if the community would embrace this, if it would catch on with potential students. I knew I wanted to be in a college environment,…
