WORCESTER — When the Holy Cross baseball team captured its first Patriot League championship in 2017, coach Greg DiCenzo proudly raised the coveted trophy, but quickly handed it off to his players swarmed around him.

“I’m just so happy for them,” DiCenzo said on that bright, sunny day at Fitton Field. “They’ve earned this. They deserve this.”

Throughout DiCenzo’s 12 seasons at Holy Cross, it was always about his players.

That’s why Thursday afternoon’s team meeting was so difficult.

DiCenzo informed his players that he is leaving Holy Cross to become the manager of the Lake County Captains, the Class-A affiliate of the Cleveland Indians.

“Today was a hard one,” DiCenzo said. “It was really hard talking to them today. It stunk. A lot of them were pretty upset, but they’re tough kids. I coach them tough, so if they can handle me as a coach, they can handle this with flying colors. I told them it would be harder on me.”

Assistant coach Ed Kahovec will serve as interim coach for the 2020 season. The Crusaders open the year Feb. 14 at the University of South Carolina.
