The University of South Carolina Beaufort baseball team opened the season with a 6-0 win over Mid-Atlantic at home Saturday.
Seven USCB pitchers combined for the shutout. Eamonn Collins, Matt Malatesta and Harrison Bell pitched two innings each and kept the Mustangs hitless with nine total strikeouts. Bell was the winning pitcher with three strikeouts, no hits and a walk.
The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the fifth when the Sand Sharks put up four runs. An infield single by Daniel Searless and a throwing error allowed for the game’s first run. A wild pitch brought in the second run and consecutive bases-loaded walks capped off the scoring.
RBIs by pinch hitter Alexander Humphrey and Nick Milhan expanded the lead to 6-0 in the seventh.
MACU (0-1) threatened in the seventh inning and loaded the bases, but Tanner Davis forced a groundout to escape the jam.
USCB (1-0) stays home for three games against Point University. The series begins at 1 p.m. Friday with a doubleheader and concludes Saturday at noon.
