Abone Sr. to be inducted into MV Baseball HOF

Longtime Smith Post manager Tony Abone Sr. is being inducted into the Mohawk Valley Baseball Hall of Fame. The induction ceremony for Abone, Donald Albin and Kevin Green will be Saturday, March 21, at the Travelodge in Little Falls.

Abone, a veteran of the Korean War, developed his management skills in baseball first with the Rome American Little League, then the Rome Federal Little League and the Rome Farm League before settling in with Smith Post of the American Legion Baseball League. Throughout his 38-year career, he compiled a 730-291-4 record, five state finalist appearances, two state titles (1978 and 1998) and numerous Oneida County and District V titles. With Smith Post, he “guided and mentored countless young athletes achieving outstanding success along the way,” the Hall of Fame stated in its announcement. He was inducted into the Rome Sports Hall of Fame in 2006.

At Oneonta State Albin was a two-time All-SUNYAC and was undefeated in conference play, posting a record of 14-0 over his career. He helped lead the Red Dragons to four straight SUNYSC titles.
