Delgado Community College baseball is getting a big gift from New Orleans Saints and Pelicans owner Gayle Benson.
Delgado baseball has an impressive history under Coach Joe Scheueermann. Over 1,000 wins, 13 conference championships, and five appearances in the junior college world series. Now they’re getting a much-needed locker room.
Currently, the team uses a marine “safe house” container, generously donated to the program.
The groundbreaking was last Thursday. Coach Joe Scheuermann tells us construction will begin almost immediately. They are finalizing the budget and the designs now, and the completion date is October, 2020. Construction will be ongoing during the season; crews will work while there are no games at Kirsch Rooney Field on the Delgado City Park Campus.
Said Coach Scheuermann, “This has been in the works for a long time. It will house the baseball locker room, and also a training and rehab center for all Delgado Student Athletes, including men’s and women’s basketball. On the second floor, there will be a study hall and computer lab for the athletes, to help them succeed in the classroom as well.”
