Wake Forest Baseball vs. Long Beach State preview

For the first time since 2018, Wake Baseball will depart from the friendly confines of The Couch and head elsewhere for a non-conference series. In 2018, Wake Baseball traveled to Santa Clara where they dropped two of three to the Broncos including an epic 14 inning loss where Santa Clara walked off on a double by Joe Becht. This weekend, the Deacons will return to California for the third time in five years. This time, they will face a traditional power who has been mired by recent drama within the program after coming off one of the worst seasons in the history of the program: Long Beach State.


While the other Long Beach State athletic teams go by the newly implemented nickname “Beach,” the baseball program continues to go by their unofficial nickname “Dirtbags.” The Dirtbag nickname is a point of pride for the players and alumni who’ve played for the program, but last season’s 14-41 record was the worst for Long Beach State since 1988 when they went 14-45, which was the year prior to Dirtbag legend Dave Snow taking over the head coaching position.
